Biedouw Valley Area – Western Cape: Our client is looking for a Farm Manager to join the team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Self-study mindset and strong independent learning ability are essential.
  • Degree/Diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Production, or equivalent — or strong practical experience.
  • ±1 year experience with a degree, ±5 years with a diploma, or ±10 years proven seed production experience.
  • Knowledge of vegetable seed production is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with livestock (especially goats and sheep) advantageous.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency in farm machinery operation and basic mechanical maintenance.
  • Basic computer literacy (Excel, record keeping, email communication).
  • Willingness to learn and apply agricultural technologies (e.g., drones, smart water systems).
  • Practical understanding of irrigation systems, pest management, and soil management.
  • Highly self-motivated and capable of independent decision-making.
  • Problem-solver with a strong practical and analytical approach.
  • Passionate about continuous learning and innovation.
  • Resilient and adaptable, thriving in a remote, challenging environment.
  • Strong leadership, time management, and interpersonal skills.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
 
Onion Seed Production Management
  • Plan, plant, manage, and harvest onion seed crops (annual cycle: May–December).
  • Implement crop rotation, irrigation scheduling, and pest and disease control.
  • Coordinate pollination activities, including managing relationships with beekeepers.
  • Oversee post-harvest processes: drying, threshing, and seed quality control.
  • Maintain detailed operational and production records.
Farm Operations and Sustainability
  • Monitor and manage soil health, crop rotations, and sustainable practices.
  • Implement and maintain irrigation systems efficiently.
  • Drive innovation through technology — drones for inspection, future smart water management.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs of farm infrastructure and equipment.
Staff Management
  • Lead, supervise, and train farm workers.
  • Foster a positive, efficient, and safety-oriented work environment.
Livestock Support
  • Assist with the basic care of goats and sheep.
  • Manage grazing schedules to align with cropping plans.
