Iringa area – Tanzania: To lead and oversee comprehensive veterinary care in a high-performing dairy farm, ensuring optimal animal health, biosecurity, reproductive efficiency, and compliance with global best practices in dairy herd management.
 
Due to the location of the farm this position would suit a single person.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent internationally recognized degree.
  • Registered with national veterinary board or council.
  • Certified in Artificial Insemination, Reproductive Ultrasound, or Herd Health Management.
  • Fluent in English; working knowledge of local languages is a plus.
  • 6–10+ years of hands-on veterinary practice in large-scale commercial dairy farms.
  • Proven leadership in managing herd health, reproductive programs, and emergency cases.
  • Exposure to well-established dairy systems, whether local of international is considered an
  • added advantage.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
 
Strategic Herd Health Leadership
  • Design and implement proactive herd health programs.
  • Lead disease prevention, diagnostics, and treatment protocols.
  • Monitor herd performance metrics (e.g., mastitis rate, fertility, lameness) and take
  • corrective action.
Reproductive Management & Genetic Improvement
  • Manage fertility programs, including, artificial insemination, and pregnancy diagnosis
  • (ultrasound/manual).
  • Collaborate with breeding specialists to improve genetic performance.
  • Analyze reproductive KPIs to optimize calving intervals and conception rates.
Emergency & Surgical Care
  • Perform advanced medical and surgical interventions (e.g., C-sections,).
  • Oversee 24/7 emergency care protocols and manage critical cases.
Biosecurity & One Health Compliance
  • Lead biosecurity planning and risk mitigation.
  • Implement zoonotic disease control measures and ensure staff safety.
  • Align with One Health principles integrating animal, environmental, and human health.
Calf & Young Stock Development
  • Oversee neonatal care protocols, early disease detection, and colostrum programs.
  • Ensure vaccination, nutrition, and dehorning schedules are followed for optimal calf growth.
Regulatory & Welfare Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to local and international veterinary and welfare standards (e.g., OIE, FAO,
  • EU, USDA guidelines).
  • Manage reporting requirements for notifiable diseases and treatment logs.
Training, Mentoring & Capacity Building
  • Train and supervise junior vets, para-vets, herdsmen, and farm staff.
  • Promote continuous learning through regular workshops and updated SOPs.
  • Foster a culture of animal welfare, professionalism, and safety.
Health Record Management & Data Analysis
  • Use herd management software (e.g., DairyComp, Uniform Agri, or SAP-integrated systems).
  • Analyze health and treatment records to advise management on improvements.
  • Generate regular reports for farm decision-making and audits.
