Addo/Kirkwood – Eastern Cape:  A leading company based in the Eastern Cape, is looking for a technical manager over approximately 1,000 hectares of citrus orchards of various varieties in an automated sphere in the Sundays River Valley

We are looking for a motivated individual who has farming background (with 3 or more years’ farming experience consecutively prior to date of application in any farming industry).

Someone who is self-motivated, systems driven, works well under pressure and a good organiser.

An individual capable of working and communicating well, within a structured team.

Someone with a strong work ethic with the relevant technical experience to operate independently.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must have a relevant B.Sc. tertiary qualification or equivalent
  • AVCASA or equivalent qualifications would be beneficial
  • Must be bi-lingual (Afrikaans and/or English as one of the languages)
  • Must have a valid RSA Driver’s license
  • Must not have a criminal record
  • In-depth technical knowledge in pest control, irrigation and fertigation practices and the implementation thereof, relating to the citrus industry

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analysing existing operations and techniques in orchard and recommending improvements.
  • Preparing plans and schedules for spraying and fertigation and ensuring staff understands expectations. Implement systems to improve efficiency of the current spray and fertigation programs.
  • Visiting the different areas to inspect orchards and, perform tests on soil and water and related management practices.
  • Consulting with the area manager and alerting management where problems are identified.
  • Monitor and report on own findings of the different phenological stages.
  • Report on the efficacy in the implementation of key plant growth regulator applications.
  • Coordinate the leaf and soil sampling program.
  • Assist the TM with soil profiling and mapping.
  • Fertigation & foliar spray implementation; spot checks on EC, tank mixes, etc.
  • Ensuring fertilizers, pesticides, and other supplies are regularly restocked.
  • Collaborating with senior staff to prepare budgets and financial reports.
  • Building professional networks and keeping abreast of developments in agricultural science.
  • Management to ensure compliance of food safety, quality and legality at all times including Global Gap, HACCP and BRC requirements.
  • Maintain and develop the Quality Management and HACCP systems to ensure that both customer and legal obligations are delivered.
  • Assist in data handling & evaluation and report writing.
  • Conduct ad hoc technical assignments.
  • Manage pest and disease control, including auditing the scouting procedure, reporting on pest and disease findings.
  • Monitor and report to management on the progress and efficiency of the pest and disease and fertilizer control program.
  • Conduct ad hoc technical assignments.
  • Supervise the planning and implementation of field trials and packhouse storage trials.
  • Supervise the harvesting of field trials.
  • Assist in fruit sampling for cultivar evaluations and displays.

Supervise the care and maintenance of cultivar trial plantings
