Our client in the Scientific Research sector has an opportunity available for a Director: Centre for High Performance Computing in the Pretoria area.
  • A Master’s degree in science, engineering or technology with at least ten years’ experience in research and development within the high performance computing domain at senior management level
  • A Doctoral degree natural science, computer science, mathematical science, engineering, or computational science will be advantageous;
  • Extensive experience in stakeholder management (external and internal);
  • Experience in international collaborative research and management;
  • Evidence of internationally recognized research activities equivalent to that of a principal or chief scientist, including publication record, human capital development and peer recognition;
  • At least ten years’ experience in research leadership and management in a large research organisation, including all aspects from strategy through to operations;
  • A significant post-qualification experience in research and research management.  A management qualification will be highly beneficial;
  • Demonstrated experience in long-term strategy formulation on group, institutional and national levels;
  • Proven track record in attracting research grants;
  • Proven track record of internationally recognised expertise, leadership and management at a senior level with experience in a complex research and development environment;
  • Significant and broad knowledge of the HPC domain, related R&D and innovation issues and human capital development challenges and solutions
  • Specific scientific knowledge of the fields of research within the CHPC to ensure, in consultation, appropriate research strategies within the various research groups and the related institutions are followed
  • Proven ability to deal effectively and set direction, with virtually no assistance, with complex issues within a complex environment with typically no precedents to rely upon or requiring unique approaches and/or solutions
  • Develop and contribute to the plans and strategies to implement the components of the national level strategies relevant to the CHPC to ensure the achievement of the aims of the national CHPC
  • Develop and contribute to longer term national and international strategies that will lead to significant growth in the national HPC research capacity and capability
  • Contribute to financial sustainability of the Centre by attracting third party funding through research and partnership grants
  • Develop and implement effective plans that create an appropriate environment for the sustainable growth of the cluster of competencies in the centre, including, but not limited to human capital development, research and computational infrastructure, resourcing and investment and the conceptualization and creation of new research groups and competences
  • Ensure and oversee the achievement of the short (typically one year), medium and long-term key performance and operational targets for the whole centre
