The Senior Transport Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all on-site coal transport operations, with direct control of third-party transporters operating the mine. The role ensures safe, efficient movement of coal between pit, stockpiles, plant, and discard areas, while enforcing strict compliance with mine safety standards and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities:

a. On-Site Transport Operations Management
  • Supervise and coordinate daily transport activities the mine (ROM, product coal, discard).
  • Control truck movements between loading and tipping points.
  • Ensure optimal cycle times, truck utilisation, and continuous material flow.
  • Manage loading points, haul roads, and dumping areas to avoid bottlenecks.
b. 3rd Party Transporter Control (On-Site)
  • Directly manage contractor trucks, drivers, and supervisors operating on-site.
  • Ensure all contractor personnel comply with mine rules, procedures, and production plans.
  • Control shift deployment, truck allocations, and routing the pit and plant areas.
  • Enforce discipline and immediately address unsafe or non-compliant behaviour.
c. Safety, Health & Environment (Critical Focus)
  • Enforce compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and site-specific standards.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings, PTOs, and inspections on contractor activities.
  • Monitor driver behaviour, speed compliance, and safe tipping practices.
  • Investigate transport-related incidents (collisions, near misses, spillage).
  • Ensure all vehicles are roadworthy and compliant before entering the mine.
d. Operational Coordination
  • Work closely with load & haul, production, plant, and weighbridge teams.
  • Align transport activities with mining plans and plant feed requirements.
  • Respond in real-time to operational changes, delays, or breakdowns.
e. Weighbridge & Load Control
  • Ensure accurate tonnage control and reconciliation.
  • Prevent overloading, underloading, and material losses.
  • Verify dispatch instructions and correct routing of coal types.
f. Performance & Efficiency Management
  • Monitor contractor KPIs:
  • Cycle times
  • Tons moved per shift
  • Truck availability
  • Queue times
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement improvements on-site.
  • Reduce idle time, congestion, and operational delays.
g. Reporting & Administration
  • Compile shift and daily reports on production, delays, and contractor performance.
  • Record incidents, breakdowns, and deviations.
  • Provide feedback to management on operational risks and improvements.

Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Diploma/Degree in Mining, Logistics, or related field (advantageous)
  • Minimum 5–8 years mining experience (load & haul / transport)
  • At least 3 years supervising on-site transport or contractors a mine
  • Valid Driver’s License
Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of opencast coal load & haul operations
  • Experience managing contractor fleets mining environments
  • Understanding of haul road design, traffic management, and pit operations
  • Familiarity with weighbridge systems and dispatch control
  • Knowledge of MHSA and mine safety systems

  • Opencast mining experience (coal essential)
  • Experience with high-volume contractor mining fleets
