Underground Mechanical Engineer (12 Month Contract)
Our client is seeking an experienced Underground Mechanical Engineer to support underground mining operations on a 12-month contract at its Mooinooi, North West operation. The role is accountable for ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective performance of underground mechanical equipment and infrastructure. The position supports production objectives while ensuring full compliance with statutory and site-specific requirements. Our client is an integrated mining group focused on the responsible extraction and beneficiation of platinum group metals (PGMs) and chrome concentrates. The operation places safety, health, and environmental stewardship at the centre of its activities. Minimum Requirements:
- BEng / BSc in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years’ underground mining experience.
- Advantageous: GCC Mines & Works. (Mechanical)
- Proven experience with underground mobile and fixed mechanical equipment.
- Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant regulations.
- Experience in maintenance management, equipment reliability, and breakdown analysis.
- Strong understanding of risk management and safe work practices.
- Computer literacy (MS Office and maintenance management systems)
- Medically fit for underground work.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Ensure all underground mechanical installations, equipment, and maintenance activities comply with MHSA and site standards.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to achieve safe and sustainable production targets.
- Manage and optimise planned maintenance systems to improve equipment availability and reliability.
- Investigate mechanical failures, conduct root cause analyses, and implement corrective actions.
- Conduct regular underground inspections to identify risks, defects, and non-compliance.
- Review and approve mechanical designs, standards, and technical documentation.
- Support capital projects, equipment upgrades, and life-of-asset strategies.
- Manage contractor performance and ensure work is executed safely and to specification.
- Compile engineering reports, risk assessments, and performance data for management review.
- Work closely with production, engineering, and safety teams to drive continuous improvement.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and operational discipline.
