R&D Scientist – Explosives & Emulsion Technology
An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced R&D Scientist with strong practical expertise with emulsions or explosives, laboratory development, and on-site technical support.
Based in Secunda.

You are a practical, solutions-driven scientist who enjoys balancing laboratory research with field application. You are comfortable working both in the lab and on-site, engaging with clients, solving technical challenges, and driving product innovation in demanding mining environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, modify, and optimise emulsion explosive formulations for mining and blasting applications
  • Conduct laboratory testing, quality analysis, and performance evaluations on explosive products and raw materials
  • Troubleshoot product performance issues and recommend technical improvements based on field and laboratory data
  • Work closely with clients to understand operational challenges and customise explosive solutions accordingly
  • Conduct regular site visits to support product implementation, monitor performance, and provide technical guidance
  • Analyse blast results, product behaviour, and operational data to drive continuous product improvement
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and operational teams to ensure product consistency and compliance
  • Investigate process deviations, equipment issues, and product anomalies within the laboratory and plant environment
  • Compile technical reports, testing documentation, and product performance feedback
  • Ensure compliance with SHE standards, quality systems, and sustainable operational practices
  • Support training initiatives on product handling, application, and best practices
Requirements
✔ BSc / BEng in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
✔ 7+ years’ experience within explosives, emulsion technology, mining laboratories, or related environments
✔ Strong practical laboratory experience in explosive formulation, testing, and quality evaluation
✔ Experience working directly with mining clients and conducting technical site visits
✔ Knowledge of explosive manufacturing processes and product optimisation
✔ Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
